above left ventricle; blood enters via the pulmonary veins and exits through the mitral valve

Function:
drains/pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left ventricle

Importance in cardiovascular diseases:
atrial arrhythmias; dilated in mitral valve disease; site of emboli formation in atrial fibrillation
