Cardiovascular Physiology Interest Group

 

Mission Statement

Investigators in the area of large animal cardiovascular research and/or medical device testing will share their individual ongoing research projects to identify any overlaps between research efforts and discuss potential collaborations within the University of Minnesota. Participants will also consider any possible industry partnerships related to their collective research.

  • Interest group meeting on October 1, 2003 with a presentation and tour of the Visible Heart® Lab.
  • Collaborative effort from various interest group members to write chapters for the textbook Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy, Physiology and Devices (Humana Press, 2005).
  • Organization and delivery of PHSL 5510, Advanced Cardiac Physiology and Anatomy short course in January 2004; lectures were presented by various interest group members.
  • Interest group meeting on February 4, 2004 with a presentation and tour of the Experimental Surgical Services labs (hosted by Dick Bianco).
  • Interest group meeting on February 23, 2004 with a guest lecturer, Dr. H. Fred Downey from the University of Texas-Fort Worth.
  • A special breakout session highlighting the Cardiovascular Research Interest Group during the Design of Medical Devices conference at the University of Minnesota (April 7-9, 2004); presentations by Dick Bianco, Dr. Alex Hill, Dr. Rob Gallegos, and Paul Iaizzo.
  • Poster presented by Mike Kimmel at the Design of Medical Devices conference (April 2004); title: Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy: Latest Depolarization Technique in Healthy Swine Hearts.
  • Informal luncheon for visiting guest speaker, Dr. Kristina Ropella, Professor of Biomedical Engineering (Marquette University) and Cardiovascular Research Interest Group members on Tuesday, May 18, 2004.  Dr. Ropella spoke as part of the LHI lecture series on that same day.
  • Interest group meeting on December 1, 2004 with a presentation and lab tour by Dr. Kenneth Liao.
  • Organization and delivery of PHSL 5510, Advanced Cardiac Physiology and Anatomy short course in January 2005; lectures presented by various interest group members.
  • Presentation by Dr. Maximo Valentinuzzi, Consejo Nacional Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET) in Argentina.
  • Organization and delivery of PHSL 5510, Advanced Cardiac Physiology and Anatomy short course in January 2006; lectures presented by various interest group members.
  • Dr. Natalia Trayanova, visiting professor from Tulane University's Biomedical Engineering Department, presented "Virtual Reality in the Race Against Sudden Cardiac Death" on April 6, 2006.
  • Dr. med Roland Prondzinsky presented a lecture entitled "Transcoronary Stimulation" on November 17, 2006; Dr. Prondzinsky is from Carl-von Basedow-Klinkum, Merseburg, Germany.
  • Dr. John R. Liddicoat, Vice President of Medtronic's Cardiac Surgery Division, presented the keynote speech ("Structural Heart Disease: Evolving Therapies") for the Advanced Cardiac Physiology and Anatomy course on January 8, 2007; Interest group members were invited to attend.
  • Dr. Igor Efimov, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, presented "New Approaches to Device Therapy of Cardiac Arrhythmias: Insights from Optical Imaging" as part of the Lillehei Lecture Series on March 6, 2007; Interest group members were invited.
